Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists). It mimics the natural hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite. Originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, semaglutide has proven highly effective at improving glycemic control and has additional benefits, including promoting weight loss. It is the active ingredient in both Ozempic (for type 2 diabetes) and Wegovy (specifically approved for chronic weight management).
Semaglutide is administered via a once-weekly subcutaneous injection and is typically prescribed alongside diet and exercise. In both diabetes and weight-loss contexts, it has demonstrated significant benefits in clinical trials, including reduced cardiovascular risk in people with type 2 diabetes. However, it may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in rare cases, pancreatitis. Semaglutide represents a major advancement in metabolic health and is part of a growing trend of medications that target hormonal pathways to treat obesity and diabetes more effectively
